Wicken Wood - permissive paths
Our Path Warden, Justine Rutledge, has been asked by several walkers to find out the scale and timing of the current work in Wicken Wood. Justine commented "I tried walking in the wood yesterday but the trenches make it pretty inaccessible. I did try crossing one trench and nearly got stuck in the clay so I want to warn others to stay clear!"
Nicholsons, who manage the wood on behalf of the owner replied on the 12th April: "The weather earlier in the year has not helped but the drying up continues. So there will be about a month left to complete. Once done, the ruts across the rides will be levelled, we will then action any rutting in the woods themselves. All the areas will then be planted in the autumn". This is expected to be a once in a decade operation.
For anyone not aware, the owner has granted restricted access to Wicken Wood by agreeing to permissive paths which link up with other footpaths. If anyone wishes to walk on these paths, they should sign up to the "Friends of Wicken Wood" on the Nicholsons website, where full details are given. The link is Friends sign up
