May Day Scarecrow Festival
A popular event!
With a lot of preparation, a great deal of team work and some good luck with the weather, our second May Day Scarecrow festival was 'the busiest Wicken has ever been!' People came from far and wide to see our scarecrows and be entertained for the afternoon. Having been hailed as 'No 2.' in the 'Top 10 best things to do in Milton Keynes this bank holiday weekend' by the free Milton Keynes newspaper MK Citizen, the pressure was on to make the day a success, and it was!
With hot food, cakes, locally made apple juice, ice creams, craft beers and the bar open, no one went hungry. The Wicked Apple Juice, organically produced from apples from Wicken Manor, made an incredible £54.70 for the charity Marys Meals, which provides meals for school children in the poorest countries of the world.
The Craft Stalls, raffle, Cricket activities and the Great Gappo tent provided fun and enjoyment for the whole family and an opportunity to learn new skills.
With the sale of the trail maps we made £172 for the Air Ambulance. As people picked up their map, they headed around the village to see all of the wonderful Scarecrows that the villagers had clearly spent a great deal of time planning and making. It was a pleasant walk and the rain held off all day for us. The map also included the voting form and the selection of a winner proved difficult for most. The standards were incredibly high.
The clear winners of the vote were ET who won our amazing trophy for the second year running. Joint second place went to Mary Poppins and Harry Potter, who also came second last year. Coming in third was Paddington.
The bar has been set high for next year entries! All of the amazing entries are pictured below.
Looking ahead to next year please get in contact if you would like to participate in our May Day Scarecrow Festival 2020. We will be particularly looking for stall holders and are providing an early bird discount for anyone who books a stall before January 2020.
